Ankle problems can be caused by a variety of things including: ankle instability, arthritis, gout, tendinitis, fracture, nerve compression (tarsal tunnel syndrome), infection and poor structural alignment of the leg or foot.

Unlike ankle strains - which affect the muscles - an ankle sprain is an injury to ligaments in the ankle. Some ankle sprains are much worse than others.
