Nail Fungus

Fungus is an organism that lives in warm, moist areas. Toenail fungus is a common problem that affects people of all ages, but is most commonly seen in older individuals.

Causes
Toenail fungus often begins as an infection in the skin called tinea pedis, or Athlete’s Foot. It starts at the end of the nail and overtime grows underneath.

Symptoms
Over time, the growing of the fungus underneath the toenail causes it to change its appearance, such as yellow or brownish discoloration. It can also cause thickening and deformity of the toenail.

Treatment
Many topical and oral treatments exist for toenail fungus, but the treatment that is fastest, safest and produces the best results with the least side effects is a laser treatment. A podiatrist can most effectively diagnose the problem and recommend proper treatment.
